Epilepsy Treatment Center
The Epilepsy Center of Guangdong Sanjiu Brain Hospital is constituted by the department of epileptology, the department of pediatrics, the department of neurophysiology and epilepsy localization, the department of epilepsy surgery, the department of neuropsychology, the epileptic nursing team and the neuro-rehabilitation department, with 58 medical workers in all. With 103 beds specially for epileptics, it is equipped 40 high sampling rate（>10 000Hz）produced by Nihon Kohden, video electroencephalogram (EEG) array of high ratio，over half of which are high-end devices with 256 channel, 192 channel, 128 channel, 64 channel, automatic electrical stimulator for brain functional mapping，high resolution cameras ( resolution ratio 1920×1080), 12 set of powerful playback workstations and data processing systems. Moreover, it has a Philips 1.5 T magnetic resonance (NMR), which can be used for the examination and diagnosis of epilepsy, a 3.0 T MRI machine produced by the GE Company, a whole-body CT scanner, the third generation ROSA (the epilepsy surgical positioning assist robot) by Medtech in France , the Brainlab neurosurgery navigation system, the magnetoencephalography for localization of brain functions and epileptic zones by 4D Company in the U.S.
The center is committed to achieve the ultimate goal of improving the living and life quality epileptic patients. Toward this end, it has formulated a process of standardized clinical word and development of applied technology (for service). Every day, the large number of epileptic outpatients are initially diagnosed by experts from the epileptology department and the pediatric department. Patients in need are hospitalized for further assessment. Based on the results of clinical examinations, electroencephalogram ( EEG ), MRI, blood routine tests, biochemical tests etc., a definite diagnosis can be made for them and then comprehensive medicine treatment or pediatric treatment will be carried out accordingly. A cooperative consultation will be held in the center in order to work out diagnosis and treatment plans when necessary. If a focal (or parts) epilepsy case cannot be relieved after long-term systematic and comprehensive treatment (including medicine treatment, ketogenic diet and the like), doctors-in-charge and experts of positioning diagnostics will together work out a detailed plan for preoperative assessment and positioning diagnosis inspection. Then experts from different departments of the center (the department of epileptology department, the pediatric department, the surgical department, the positioning diagnostics department, and the division of neuropsychology) will held a cooperative conference to determine the feasibility for surgical treatment and a concrete implementation plan.
In 2014, the epilepsy center completed 66 SEEG electrodes implantations for the purpose of monitoring and assessment in order to remove epileptogenic zone by surgery, with no permanent deficit occurring. Two seminars of intractable cases are held every week in the center, which are often actively participated in by many experts from within the Guangdong Province and other regions of China. In such seminars, chiefs of different departments report to other participants the medical record data, diagnosis and treatment process, examination results ofand the further treatment plans for the epileptic cases under discussion, which is followed by the consultant program. These seminars have become an important foundation for the high quality and safety of medical care. Epilepsy medicine is a traditional discipline and service project in Guangdong Sanjiu Brain Hospital. With the unremitting efforts of several generations, the hospital has developed for this discipline a talent team and systematic service technology. The epilepsy center has been summing up experience and making continuous progress, aiming to be able to provide the international first-class level of medical service in the future.
